DRACO

Finding the hidden weapons has unsettled me. Admittedly, we don’t have access to explosives under ordinary circumstances, as the Sarkarnii are the most likely candidates to cause havoc if we did have them, so the weapons stash could have gone unnoticed for an eternity.

Only someone knows it was there, and the fact it was, right under my nose, doesn’t sit right.

Also, I don’t like not being bound to my szikra in a way which is completely unexpected. I like the fact her life is not at risk from her collar, but I want to be close to her, touching her, unable to get away from her. If I thought the need to shed was uncomfortable, this has to be worse.

At least until I have her by my side again, then I feel as if I could take on the entirety of the galaxy. I breathe in her scent until my head spins.

“Sarkarnii, with me.” I stride past my den of warriors, the rest of the crowd which greeted us having disbursed at my not so subtle suggestion.

My quarters are as I left them, only with fresh food and ale-wine laid out. Drega is through the doors first, his arms filled with the carrying sacks from the tralu.

“Put them down here.” I point at the foot of my chair. “Get the rest of them in here. Any sign of Draxx?”

“No,” Drega says as he leaves.

“Draxx?” Amber looks at me as I take my seat and hold out my hand to her.

When she takes it, I sweep her onto my lap, and she squeaks beautifully. “My other brother. Somewhat of a liability. He’s taken to spending much of his time in the pit, fighting those long forgotten by anyone in some sort of attempt to atone.”

“For what?”

“For the loss of the female promised to him.” I sigh. “We all lost much when the Liderc took our home, but to lose our parents, the female he cared about”—I shake my head—“it nearly broke him.”

“That is so sad,” Amber says.

To my surprise, her concern for another—which I would expect to send me into a frenzy at the idea of her even thinking about another male—instead makes my heart beat a steady rhythm.

Despite the mating gland being in overdrive, my desire to please my szikra is overwhelming.

“Do not be sad. If I can find happiness, then he can too.” I curl my hand around hers.

Amber’s eyes find mine, and I feel her body go tense. She opens her mouth just as my den of warriors clatters through the door, unbidden.

“Draco!” they hail me, before descending on the aforementioned food and ale-wine like a plague of batiz flies.

I roll my eyes as Drega joins them. Only the nevver doesn’t break things up. If anything, I think he makes it worse.

“Enough!” I roar, and with plenty of elbows, the occasional tail, plus I’m pretty sure I see a wing, the scrum disentangles into the rag-tag den of what’s left of the entire Sarkarnii species.

Or at least that’s what we’ve been told.
